Synthesized crickets and sine waves, nature(?) behold! Multichannel installation at Mirabellgarten Salzburg.
Listen to an excerpt
If one waits long enough is a 16-channel acousmatic composition for the 2025 edition of the installative series: Sweet Spot Open Garden at Mirabellgarden in Salzburg.
Set across the scenic and slightly kitsch landmark in the city of Mozart. I wanted to create something that was blending in, but not quite. Creating the 16 channels with my modular synthesizer one by one. The crickets were synthesized using ERD Modular’s Toad, an analog computer and overall chaotic powerhouse, as well as sine waves through a low pass gate.
The installation invites listeners and viewers to reflect on how every action – much like a photographer’s or bird’s choice of a favored spot – creates a new state within an ever-evolving landscape. The title is an hommage to a photographer commenting on nature’s ways, that if you have found a spot that you want to photograph, it’s worth staying there for two or more hours, as the bird you first saw and wanted to capture will eventually return.
And so do the sine waves spanning across the 16 loudspeakers which are set up not in a circle but in a straight line. This inspired a comparison to traditional step sequencers used in techno etc. So at the end, it’s a combination of synthesized crickets, a megalomaniac 60 meter spanning sine wave „step sequencer“ and a catchy microtonal beat. Have a listen on headphones to the binaural circular version, however it doesn't translate well compared to being embedded into the sound of people walking & talking, actual crickets, birds, water fountains, etc.
